Gottschalk von Orbais ( Gottschalk der Sachse) (Gotteschalchus) um 803; † um 869
(German and english version).. in Kloster Hautvillers bei Epernay) war ein mittellateinischer Gelehrter und Dichter und entstammte einem sächsischen Grafengeschlecht. Nach dem Tod der Eltern übernahm das Kloster Fulda den Besitz, Gottschalk kam in die Obhut des Klosters und wurde gegen seinen Willen Mönch. 829 verklagte er deshalb den Abt Rabanus Maurus und erhielt die Erlaubnis, das Kloster zu verlassen.

Our surnames are among the oldest evidence of family history that we have at our disposal. Passed on from generation to generation, they often reach back to times from which no documents have survived.
